1. Introduction

Welcome to What to Watch ("we", "our", or "us"), developed and published by Pi Tech Software. We respect your privacy and are committed to protecting any information associated with your use of our mobile application (the "App").

This Privacy Policy explains how our App handles information, what data is processed, how third-party services are utilized, and your rights regarding your data.

By downloading, installing, or using What to Watch, you acknowledge and agree to the practices outlined in this Privacy Policy.

2. Information We Do NOT Collect

We strictly adhere to data minimization principles. What to Watch does NOT:

  • No Account Required: Does not require user registration, sign-up, email verification, or account management.
  • No Personal Identifiable Information (PII): Does not collect or transmit your real name, email address, phone number, physical address, contacts, or government IDs.
  • No Sensor or Hardware Access: Does not access your device's camera, microphone, photo gallery, biometric hardware, or precise GPS location.
  • No Cross-App Tracking: Does not track your activity across other applications or websites for advertising or behavioral profiling purposes.

3. Information Processed Locally on Your Device

What to Watch operates primarily as a client-side decision engine. The following information is stored exclusively in local, sandboxed device storage (via React Native AsyncStorage):

  • User Preferences: Your active streaming platform selections (e.g., Netflix, Disney+, Max, Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+), media format preference (Movies, TV Shows, or Both), genre filters, minimum rating threshold, and streaming country/region.
  • Watchlist & Saved Picks: Media titles you bookmark to watch later or mark as watched.
  • Roll History: Cache of recently rolled titles to prevent redundant suggestions during active sessions.
  • Purchase Entitlements: Local status indicating active PRO status unlocked via Google Play In-App Billing.

🔒 100% Client-Side Storage

None of your preferences, watchlist items, or roll history are uploaded to or stored on remote application servers. Everything remains on your device.

4. Third-Party Services & Network Requests

To deliver live movie recommendations, HD artwork, and in-app upgrades, the App connects with trusted third-party providers:

A. The Movie Database (TMDB) API

The App queries the TMDB API to fetch movie/TV metadata, synopsis, ratings, and streaming provider availability.

  • Transmitted Data: Standard HTTP request query parameters (e.g., selected genres, provider IDs, country code, and standard technical network headers). No personal user identifiers are sent.
  • Privacy Policy: TMDB Privacy Policy

B. Google Play In-App Billing

Optional purchases for What to Watch PRO (Ad-Free) are executed directly through the official Google Play In-App Billing infrastructure.

  • Transmitted Data: Payment methods and transaction processing are handled exclusively by Google Play. Pi Tech Software never receives, sees, or stores your credit card details or financial information.
  • Privacy Policy: Google Play Privacy Policy

C. External Streaming & Trailer Links

When you choose to view an official trailer or open where to watch a title, the App triggers standard Android intents to open the corresponding link in YouTube or your default web browser. External platforms are governed by their respective privacy policies.

5. Android Permissions

The App only declares standard non-sensitive Android permissions necessary for networking and in-app purchases:

Permission Purpose & Justification
android.permission.INTERNET Allows fetching movie/TV metadata and poster artwork from TMDB.
android.permission.ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE Detects network availability to seamlessly enable instantaneous offline catalog fallback.
com.android.vending.BILLING Enables secure Google Play In-App Billing transactions for the optional PRO upgrade.

We do not request any dangerous or sensitive runtime permissions (such as Location, Camera, Microphone, Storage, SMS, or Contacts).

6. Data Retention and Deletion

Because all user data resides locally in the application's private sandbox on your device, you have complete sovereignty over your data:

  • Clearing Stored Data: You can wipe all preferences and watchlist items immediately by opening: Settings > Apps > What to Watch > Storage > Clear Storage / Clear Data.
  • Uninstalling the App: Uninstalling What to Watch permanently deletes all sandboxed storage and associated application files.

7. Security of Information

We implement industry-standard security safeguards:

  • All external network requests use encrypted HTTPS / TLS connections.
  • Local application storage is protected by standard Android OS process isolation and sandboxing.

8. Children's Privacy (COPPA Compliance)

What to Watch is built for general audiences and is not directed to children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect, request, or maintain personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us immediately so we can take appropriate measures.

9. International Users & Compliance (GDPR & CCPA)

  • European Economic Area (GDPR) & UK: We do not collect or process personal data on remote servers. All user preferences remain on your device under your direct control.
  • California Residents (CCPA / CPRA): We do not sell, rent, or share personal information with third parties for cross-context behavioral advertising.

10. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update our Privacy Policy periodically to reflect app enhancements or legal changes. Any modifications will be posted here with an updated "Effective Date". We encourage you to review this page periodically.
